In the mid twentieth century, during the infancy of 'rock an' roll'...there were many mature people who wished to continue enjoying melodic music. This genre was referred to as ' Adult Standards ' and later 'Adult Contemporary' and also was heard on many "MOR radio stations" broadcasting a what was called a middle-of-the-road format... Marvin Hamlisch

Marvin Frederick Hamlisch (born June 2, 1944) is an American composer. He is one of only ten people to have been awarded Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and a Tony (those four together are known as an EGOT) plus a Pulitzer Prize (the other is Richard Rodgers). Hamlisch has also won two Golden Globes.
